“Branding is the art of aligning what you want people to think about your company with what people actually do think about your company. And vice-versa.”

BRANDING and TEACHING have many things in common. BOTH:

  • seek to guide people to a conclusion
  • are a product of design, not an accident
  • focus on “them” not “me.”

And I believe both share the same philosophy, more content doesn’t mean more results. Let me illustrate with the following.

example

OBJECTIVE
TEACHING: Transfer knowledge through relevant experiences
BRANDING: Gain emotional equity through relevant experiences

STEP ONE Introduce the topic, as simply as possible
TEACHING: Introduce vocabulary: turn right, turn left, go straight
BRANDING: Establish connection, awareness, need

STEP TWO Produce action
TEACHING: (Eyes closed) Use vocabulary to guide partner through the maze
BRANDING: Get people to start a conversation about your company

STEP THREE Raise the level of interaction
TEACHING: Introduce new vocabulary, increase challenge
BRANDING: Continue the conversation and build a reputation

Strategy is only one part of developing a brand strategy. You also need to develop and convey a relevant story to your audience. Making up stories is one thing but living the story is another. I’ve been to over 35 countries, met hundreds of people, got into some interesting situations and learned life lessons, that could only been taught by breathing the air, walking the streets, and shaking the hands.
